"Then I panicked. I dropped the hammer and shot up that enormous tree like a monkey.
I didn’t stop until I was as high as I could possibly go, and there I stayed, quivering with fear.”

Roald Dahl - The Witches

Getting that diagnosis

You know you need more, but are too scared to open the mountain of medical information!

The breast cancer diagnosis from the NHS is cold and impersonal and you probably don't have anyone to talk to.
You had probably never head of the word 'mastectomy' before your diagnosis. The words 'tumour' and 'mass' have you running for the hills.
Your mind races with:
"How will I cope financially?"
"How am I going to tell the kids?"
"Will I need chemotherapy?
"Will I lose my hair?"
People talk at you but you can't take anything in.
I was exactly the same. Stay on the Bus will hold your hand through the ups and down of treatment.
It's like your best friend who has come along for the ride.

The kind of thing I talk about in the book

Why 'Stay on the Bus?'

My best friend, a Macmillan nurse, gave me the best piece of advice to help me cope with my diagnosis and treatment. That was if you hadn’t guessed it to ‘Stay on the Bus.’ She told me I am in the system and that ‘bus’ will take me where I need to go.
What she was saying was - trust in the system.
Given the panic you are experiencing, you might not have the stomach to trawl through a whole book about breast cancer. You may just want specific information. That's why I've set the book loosely into three sections as people have treatments at different times.
Diagnosis - When you start your cancer journey: the uncertainty, the fear and the unknown.
Treatment - Once you are in the system: the options, the decisions, the impact and the changes.
Cutting the apron strings –The scary part when, once you have had all your treatment, you are sent out into the wide world with the words, “See you in a year,” ringing in your ears.
It's organised like this, so you can dip into sections where you need knowledge and information, leaving the rest until the next bump in the road.

I know if you are in America think 'crossing guard' but then you don't have zebra crossings.

There are so many things to consider when you have a breast cancer diagnosis.
As well as perhaps chemotherapy, mammograms and radiotherapy to get your head around.
It's an overwhelming melting pot of appointments, information overload as well as working out who will cook, clean and tell the kids about your cancer diagnosis.
Check out the blog or download the resources. I've done the hard work so you don't have to.

Often very funny, but always informative......this book should be purchased by the oncology departments of every hospital and prescribed to everyone who receives a diagnosis."
